For these select few, owning a classic wooden boat represents one of boating’s great joys. Genovese admits to being the kind of guy who likes to show off his collectibles. That Cobra sits in front of a lakeside house that features an indoor showroom for a collection of classic cars, readily seen from the water behind $150,000 worth of plate glass. “I guess it’s just another thing to feed your ego,” he offers. “I feel like I have the holy grail of Chris- Crafts. If you’re going to have one … that’s the one to have.”įor others, owning an antique boat is a chance to hold onto something special from the past. Bob Johnson, a retired family physician, remembers his uncle letting him steer classic woodies as a child, and being drawn to the gleaming speedboats tied up in the local marina. As an adult, he has purchased a succession of open speedboats. His favorites? The iconic Chris-Craft U-22 Sportsman, of which he’s owned four or five, and the recent addition of a 1929 Hickman Sea Sled. “Hickman was a very unusual guy,” Johnson recounts. “He developed a surface-piercing propeller and a tunnel hull, all in the 1920s.” In addition, the builder used engine technologies now popular more than 80 years later, such as oil coolers. “A lot of these people were ahead of their time,” Johnson says. Obviously, there’s more to this picture than simple lust over a finely varnished mahogany plank. Wood is the obvious constant, a material both beautiful and functional, and one that, historically speaking, was frequently used in intricate, aesthetically appealing ways. “Architecturally, the designs are just fantastic,” says Classic Marine owner Dwight Davis, a man who not only grew up with wood boats, but one who also now shares his knowledge at a local maritime museum. The way a boat comes together when it’s built out of wood, all the pieces, all the ribs and the structural parts, to me it’s just really fantastic. Look at the most coveted models and you’ll see wood in all its glory. Pre-World War II models are perhaps most rare and, as a result, most sought after by high-end collectors. Boats like the Gar Wood Triple Cockpit Runabout or Baby Gar, or anything from Dodge, Hacker, Dolphin or Gold Cup. Prewar Chris-Crafts are also a hot commodity, as are postwar models like Genovese’s Cobra. Wood, however, also tells a story to those who’ll listen. “It has a lot of history, and that’s what draws a lot of people into this.” “You find a 1937 Gar Wood 28-foot Triple Cockpit runabout with a Scripps V-12 302 in it, and that boat’s been owned by Marshall Fields, or some high-powered guy out in LA,” Freedom Boat Service partner Aaron Kelly explains. It’s these elite models of the 1920s that typically draw the big bidders. But like other fine works of art, they often need middlemen to arrive in the hands of their collectors. For the elite investor, that might mean using a specialty firm like Freedom. Here, specialists such as Kelly and founder Dave Bortner interview clients to determine which boat best fits their needs, research what’s available and then provide detailed dossiers on the potential candidates. Once a sale is negotiated, Freedom also offers full restoration services, from hulls to vintage engines. “A lot of times on some of this prewar stuff, you can’t get parts anymore, so you have to fabricate stuff,” Kelly explains. It’s big business, and it takes money to do what we do.” “We spend thousands of dollars sometimes just remanufacturing a cleat or a windshield bracket or a navigation light. Others, however, find part of the joy of owning a classic is in getting their hands dirty. It’s estimated that 60 to 70 percent of antique boat buyers are do-it-yourself types. Many of them have worked on a family boat with a previous generation and want to pass that experience along to their children. Others find the frequent upkeep almost therapeutic. “With a car or fiberglass boat, the relationship is very one-sided,” Davis says.

While home gardening is a multi-billion-dollar market, Thanhauser told the Greenlight judges that no one has yet to tap into it to introduce mushroom growing as a viable option for home gardeners. We are really taking mushroom growing into the 21st century,” he said. North Spore sells mushroom-growing kits, like these samples that Thanhauser brought on the TV show.Īfter Thanhauser’s pitch, Leonard asked him what differentiated North Spore from its competition. The company has invested in its e-commerce platform and its online sales of mushroom-growing supplies, including spawn, has increased year-to-date by 440%, according to Thanhauser. While the fresh-mushroom business is where the company got its start, and still represents a majority of the company’s revenue, Thanhauser said the company sees great potential in the scalability and profitability of selling mushroom spawn-the genetic material used to cultivate mushrooms. Today, North Spore sells its mushrooms to more than 75 restaurants and grocery stores in Maine, and works with specialty distributors in Boston, New York, and Seattle. They started off washing their equipment and mushrooms with a garden hose in the driveway, but within six weeks they had harvested their first mushrooms and were selling to restaurants in Portland. The friends started the business in a 500-square-foot garage in Westbrook with roughly $10,000 in startup capital. Thanhauser founded North Spore in 2014 with Jon Carver and Matt McInnis, two friends he met while at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. I worked hard on preparing for these pitches, but it is still a little hard to believe we won both.” “And this recognition is a great honor and a testament to how far we have come since our humble beginnings in a 500-square-foot garage in Westbrook. “This is an amazing windfall for us this capital will go a long way in helping us bring mushroom growing to the masses.” said Eliah Thanhauser, North Spore’s co-founder who represented the company in both pitching competitions. The mushroom farm is the first company to win both the LaunchPad and Greenlight Maine competitions in the three years that both have been held in June. The judges were Danielle Conway, dean of the University of Maine School of Law Kathie Leonard, CEO of Auburn Manufacturing and Mike Herrin, COO of Emera Maine.Įarlier this month, North Spore won Gorham Savings Bank’s Launchpad business-pitch competition and its $50,000 first-place prize. North Spore pitched on the final episode alongside two other Portland-based startups, Forager and Zootility. Three judges selected North Spore as the winner on the television show’s final episode, which you can watch on Greenlight Maine’s YouTube channel. North Spore, the Westbrook-based mushroom farm, has won Greenlight Maine and its $100,000 top prize, just weeks after the company won the Launchpad business plan competition. ELiah Thanhauser, co-founder of North Spore, accepts the $100,000 prize for winning Greenlight Maine. The selected library appears in the library list. Locate the library you want to open and click Open. Right-click in the library list and select Open Library. To load a library, the folder must have a file with the *.tbc extension. Toon Boom Studio identifies libraries with the extension *.tbc. Libraries make it easier for you to work on productions with other users who share the same templates. You can load libraries of templates stored on your computer or on another computer through your network. Rename the Library and press to validate. The library name becomes an editable field. In the Library list, select the library you want to rename, right-click and select Rename Library. The new library appears in the Library list area. Give a relevant name to your new library and click OK. In the Library List, right-click and select Create Library.īrowse for the location where you want your new library to be stored. You can create libraries in the Library view. You can create different libraries and catalogs to easily have access to your assets.įor example, in your global library, you can create a different library for each project and divide it into several categories, such as: In the Library view's right side, right-click and select View > List, Thumbnails or Details.Īs you create templates, you will soon realize that they need to be organized. The templates contained in the selected Library list are displayed on the right side of the Library view as thumbnails, either as a list or as details. Here you can find interesting artwork organized in subfolders, called catalogs, by categories such as Backgrounds, Storyboarding, Props, Characters, Cut-out Characters, Clip Arts and Special Events. Toon Boom Templates: This library stores templates provided by Toon Boom Studio. Global: This library stores templates that you can use in any project animation that you create on your computer. In your system, this library is stored in the Template folder inside of your project's main folder. Local: This library store templates that you want to use in the current animation project. It is organized by scene and is constantly updated as you work in your project. Īnimation: This library stores all the elements and drawings contained in your project. The Library List contains four default Libraries: You can also open, close and create new libraries from here. The Library List is used to navigate through the different libraries and subfolders. You can also use the slider to select the frame you want to see. If there are multiple frames in the selected template or scene, click on the Play button to play it back. In the Template list, double-click on the template you want to preview. In the Library list, select a Scene folder to display the entire scene in the preview area. In the Library view, make sure that the preview checkbox is enabled. However, if your template consists of a peg or a camera element only, nothing is going to show in the preview window. You can use the Preview area to check the contents of the Library. The Library view is used to create and manage your templates, display the folders and manage all of the content. The Library window is the centre for managing reusable content in Toon Boom Studio. You can create a template out of pieces of animation content, such as elements, drawings, images, or sounds or even collections of animation content such as drawings, images and sounds in one single template. This individual copy can be modified at anytime. Dragging a template into your scene copies the content to your timeline and does not create a link to the original. Once a template is stored in the library, it is accessible from any project. What is a Template?Ī template is a copy of the artwork stored in the library, which can be reused in different scenes. To reuse artwork, drag it into your Timeline view.Ī library can be organized using subfolders, you can have several different library folders on your hard drive. To store your artwork in the Library, drag the content into the Library. You can access these folders from your different projects. Use the Library view to reuse your artwork and animation in other scenes.Ī library is a folder where you store your templates. In this chapter, you will learn about the following: In fact, almost anything you create or use in Studio can be stored in the library. The Library in Studio has ready-to-use templates and is where you can store different elements you create like puppets, backgrounds or animations. You can share and reuse any elements you create in Toon Boom Studio as templates. This tool can also be used for deleting sensitive information from a pdf document.
